I must confess … I love spending days at the banks of the Narmada. The stunning landscapes and serenity are not the only reason. Myths and beliefs apart, I have witnessed the divinity personally. I have spent time with the mystics at the banks of the Narmada and experienced the motherhood.
It is said that of the five most sacred rivers of India – Narmada is the holiest. It is a belief that on the occasion of Ganga Dussera, Ganga comes to cleanse herself in the waters of the Narmada.
I read about Maheshwar in a post by Swami Muktanad where he writes about the days he spent with Swami Sri Shiv Chaitanya ji Maharaj. Since then, Maheshwar has been in my travel bucket list.

Maheshwar is around 95 Kms. from Indore. It takes around two hours to reach Maheshwar. The other route is from Omkareshwar. I hired a round-trip taxi from Indore. The round-trip taxi charges are nominal. Taxi will drop you at the gate of the Maheshwar fort.

Once you enter from the main gate, you easily get a local guide who can charge Rs. 250. Hiring a guide is a good idea as he can show you the key places of fort and also tell you the history associated with it.
Inside the campus is the palace of Rajmata Ahilya Devi Holkar, which has now got converted into a heritage hotel. The minimum one night charge is around Rs. 10, 000. This best suits many foreign tourists however you can get cheaper alternatives around.

Maheshwari Sarees are well known. An original Maheshwari sari can cost anywhere between Rs 1,500 to Rs 5,000.

From the boat you can have a broader view of the Maheshwar Fort. The beauty of this place itself tells why Maheshwar has been the choice of the mystics.

I wanted to visit the Ashram of Sri Shiv Chaitany ji Maharaj. I will write about this in another post.
Thank you. Very well written and explained in simple words that just makes us feel,we are also traveling with you. Looking forward for many more. Special thanks to you for keeping me connected to my mother land.
